Spring. Cool weather. Nothing special. Just another day.

At Rise:

A and B sit closely together. They both unpack boxes. C is offstage. C will be coming from the conditions of the outside. (This first scene should play quick, bright, happy. It will corrode into a much darker, colder place as it transitions into the second part.)

A

It’s the end as we know it.

B
It’s not the end it’s the beginning.

A

I hate it when you say that.

B

I’m just trying to be positive.

A

Well don’t. It’s not funny. I’m getting sick of it.

B

Some weather we’re having huh?

C knocks on Door

A

It’s supposed to be the hottest year ever.

*B Crosses to the door. B opens Door C enters and speaks

C

Did somebody call a repairman?

A&B

We did.

C

What seems to be the problem?

A&B

It’s the goddamn heater!

C

I’ll see what I can do.

Suddenly A chooses to look at their phone for a good moment. Eventually the repairman starts to inspect the broken pieces of whatever it is they find to be broken.. Take a few beats with this mundane moment.

A

So?

B

So what?

A

Well… I need help. How are we going to fix this little problem of ours?

B

I’m sorry. I don’t know if I can help right now.

A

You can’t hold a grudge forever.

B

Oh, believe me I can.

A

Listen. I wasn’t expecting this to happen.

B

What’s that supposed to mean?

A

Oh come on!

B

What?

C

Listen. I’m not sure I can help you today.

C Exits.
